Boletus pseudosensibilis Smith & Thiers Cap 6-15cm across, broadly convex; brick red to ferruginous, fading to yellow-brown or cinnamon; unpolished, dry, glabrous, cracking when dry. Tubes shallow, subdecurrent down stem; yellow. Pores minute; bright yellow, instantly deep blue when bruised. Stem 80-160 x 15-30mm, equal to slightly flared at apex; pale yellow flushed pinkish to darker red below; smooth. Flesh solid; bright yellow, instantly blue when cut. Odor mild, pleasant. Taste mild, pleasant. Spores subfusiform, 9-12 x 3-4µ. Deposit olive-brown. Habitat in mixed deciduous woods, especially oak. Often abundant. One of the commonest summer boletes in the eastern United States, especially New Jersey, occurring north and west to Michigan. Season June-September. Edible but not recommended because of risk of confusion. Comment Dilute ammonia (NH40H) applied to cap turns blue-green.
